Help!! I am building a 2000SQFT house with 11ft ceiling. I was quoted two 3 ton Trane XL16i and two 3 ton Amana units at 16 seers with dual compressors for around the same price range (11k for both). I would like to know if there is an advantage in having dual compressors vs single compressor with two stage of Trane? I am in South Texas and the AC will be used almost year round. What would be the best option Trane Single compressor with two stage or the Amana with 2 compressors? I would appreciate any info on this. Thanks

I would not recommend amana. Trane is by far the better equipment. Goodman products are still just cheap junk.

Amana is a Goodman brand name now. Goodman had a bad reputation years ago. Now Goodman/Amana are very good products, best warranty on heat exchanger (20 years). Simple to work on, standard parts, solid cabinet, good blower, good board. I take it, you are doing a zone system? Make sure you get apples for apples. Needle dick the contract. Make sure the design is right and the zones are logical. Tell the bidders you want a very detailed contract. Watch out for "don't worry about it I'll do it right" Air is one of the most important, and the by far the most complicated system to design in your "new" home. Get a contractor, who does the math, and has a lot of field experience completing, tuning and servicing air systems; or a real smart young guy with formal education, training and quality first attitude.

Trane is by far one of the most reliable systems out today. Amana is a decent system for A/C but there new furnaces have been plagued with problems. If your getting Trane quoted for the same price buy the Trane as long as the contractor is offering the same level of job as the amana dealer. Be sure as someone said earlier that your getting the same job from both contractors though. Normally Trane is a little more $$ than Amana. As far as heat exchanger warranties 20 years is standard with most manufacturers. Carrier/Bryant have extended there heat exchanger warranties now to include labor due to the law suits they faced on an earlier design flaw but by and large 20 years is pretty common for heat exchanger warranties. Saying an Amana is as good as a Trane is a little far fetched though. As far as the 300% markup on parts um... what the hell are you talking about. Dealers mark up the parts they sell not the manufacturers. If a dealer marks up a 1000% is that because he is a Trane dealer or because he is a crook? The way people get so worked up now defending Goodman is a joke. They are an adequate unit, they do the job. They are not however as efficient or quiet in most cases as the higher end units out there. They remind me a lot of Rheem in that they won't wow you but they generally won't let you down. As far as how good they are long term only time will tell.
