Do I need a vented or a ventless hood, for a 1983 year model gas range, 20 inch wide, 4 burner, with oven? With everyting on full burn, 18k BTU. Should I put a small combution intake, with a mini vac damper, in the lower cabinet next to the stove to the outside air? This is a small tight in-law unit. I'm afraid there might arise a siuation where he uses the oven for a heater all night, if the small DV furnace goes out. I don't own a copy of International Mechanical Code, if I did, I probably would not be able to interpret it correctly. I don't want to asphyxiate the in-law. My buddy's ex girl friend's husband died 10 years ago from a bad vent, in Forest Knolls, California. I don't even know the combustible fuel to air ratio for NG. Guess I need to do some studying. Static, where are you?

There is no code for using a gas range as a heater, and there is no "safe" way to vent a range because there is no separation of combustion product and ambient air. Gas range burners produce CO - especially older models. It may produce CO at levels lower than the detectable threshold of some carbon monoxide alarms, but any level of CO in the ambient, breathable air is bad. Best advice is don't ever use a range, electric or gas for anything other than cooking.
If you're really concerned about the reliability of the heater, think about getting it replaced, or finding an alternative backup - a couple of electric baseboards, or portable electric heaters, "just-in-case"

Thanks Banger, I'll put a vented range hood and intake in anyway, and make sure the tenant knows not to use it for heat. The range is a Brown Stove Works Model. It does have electric ignition and sealed burners, no clock, no timer. I cleaned it up real nice. I kind of like the simple cheap little POS. Thanks again.
