my parents have a rcba-37x5gg17 model heater (sorry that # is what he relayed to me so i dont know if its the model number of the unit or just the coil#), and its blowing cold air.

some background info: today they awoke to the sound of (battery operated) smoke detector alarms going off on all floors of their 3 story house. after looking around and not being able to identify any actual smoke or source for the alarms, my dad (as a precaution) turned off all the electrical breakers to the house. he then left and came back over 4 hours later, and turned the electricity back on.

it was then that he noted that the vents were blowing cold instead of hot/warm air.

so im not sure the smoke had anything to do with the RUUD unit (located on the bottom floor of the house). but the unit was working fine yesterday and had been fine since they switched from AC (has heat pump) over 3 months ago. they had the same problem with this unit once in the past (3 years ago), where it was blowing cold. that time im not sure what got fixed (by certified repair people) but my guess is they replaced the heating element (or whatever it is that heats up).

update:

just got off the phone with my father and he add this to add: the thermostat is on AUTO but there is a red light lit up that says AUX HEAT. apparently he is getting some heat (more like warm actually), but a very MINIMAL amount. also, he checked the RUUD UNIT and found that there seem to be 2 halves of equipment where the heat is supposed to be, and one of them is cold, the other lukewarm. also, he said there is no evidence on the unit anywhere that shows traces of smoke or fire. btw- i apologize for the limited info - i havent been to the house to check the unit so i have to rely on 3rd hand information.

so i was wondering if you guys could point out any possible suspects parts, or any procedures we could try to fix the problem. im pretty good with mechanical things, but i dont know any electronic related test procedures. i have fixed my own gas heated unit at home by simply replacing all the electronic parts (motherboard etc.) when it malfunctioned. so i am proficient in replacing parts, but not with troubleshooting or actually fixing any parts. i am confident that i can probably replace whatever's necessary as long as i know which part it is.

any help or info you guys/gals could offer would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

If you're handy with a meter then cycle heat pump and emergency heat and test components. Relays and heating elements only come with one puff of smoke so if one got smoked, it wont be working. Also it might be cheaper to call a pro than to replace all the electronic parts.
