We have an older (~12yrs old) Freedom 90 furnace serviced (ducts and coil cleaning)today by Sears today. Everything seems to go well until we smell slight burning. It only happened briefly, the tech said it was normal. I took it for granted and opened up the Aprilaire filter box and saw the week old filter (w/o plastic box frame type) was partially torn and sucked into the furnace side. Apparently Sears filter was too powerful which collapsed the filter. I tried to fixed and stapled the torn sections, but it got sucked into the furnace partially again. The fiberglass like seal on the filter box was also sucked into the furnace. At this point, I took out the entire filter element and smelled something burning from itagain. The red light on the furnace was blinking non-stop and we can't find the menu (just moved in a week ago). I don't know much about HVAC but is concerned w/o the filter, any lint go straight into the source and cause a fire, so we don't want to risk it and turn it off completely. We are freezing our aXX off, please advise...........
