We used to have a Lennox heat pump with a Lennox electric furnace. We replaced our 20 year old Lennox thermostat with a Honeywell RTH8500D. Everything was working fine until the HP died on us.
The HP was replaced and the coils had to be moved from under the furnace elements to above the elements. Now, we had to have the thermostat replaced because we could not get the heat pump to be turned off by the thermostat when the furnace was running.
I really miss my 8500 and wish I could figure out a way to have it turn off the heat pump when the furnace starts.
Can you help?

If your coil is above your electric elements and your system is not a downflow, then it is wrong. Sometimes both should be running at the same time but not if the coil is after the elements. That will put an excessive load on your system. Also have you tried emergency heat? That will run electric only and not HP. If your new stat does not have an Em. heat setting, then I would replace it with one that does.

Thanks for the info. I guess our contractor decided to put the coil above the elements because it didn't fit where the old one was. This allowed THEM to save money by not getting the right part for our furnace. :(
The emergency/aux heat works fine now with our new crappy thermostat. And that one does stop the HP when the electric elements are in use. I just wish I could do that with my 8 month old RTH8500D.
