Hi,

I need some advice on the refrigerant line size on our install. Here is the story....We had a 3 ton heatpump unit and after a few months we discovered that it was not producing enough and installer agreed to just swap it for a 4 ton and pay a little difference. This was all done and the new heatpump is working now. My concern is that with the 3 ton, 7/8 lines were needed. for the 4 ton, Goodman, recommends 7/8 up to 24 feet and 1 1/8" from 25-50. We have 30-33feet on line in all. The installer assured me that he spoke to Goodman and they assured him that if that was an issue the heatpump would make a lot of noise and overheat.

I need your opinions on this guys. Would you guys replace them? I don't want to have issues in a couple years. If it is ok though, I don;t want to spend the extra $$ and time in fixing something that will not cause any problems.

what problems or energy loss can this cause, if any?

Thanks

There's nothing wrong with you phoning the manufacturer yourself and explaining the situation. Make sure you have all your facts straight before you pick up the phone. Model, serial no. of indoor and outdoor units, and if you have that info. from the old units as well. If the installer was unable to do a proper heat load calculation to ensure a proper install, how can you be sure he even talked to Goodman. And any installer who screws up that badly should have swallowed the difference between the two. Stress to Goodman that you want to know if your install is covered by warrenty. Very important. If you have a crappy install and he won't fix it, get someone else.

i would agree with Yari if the stiuation was the other was around the system running on 7/8 diam pipe should not be a problem for oil return because the velocity of gas is higher then in a 1 1/8 pipe as a seasoned installer i will be honest with other comment as well its cheaper but the piping is all ready installed

Why would a manufacturer have specific line sizes written in the installation manual and then state that what is wriiten doesn't have to be adhered to? They wouldn't, and they don't.If an installer doesn't install a unit as per manufacturers litature, there is a possibility of it voiding the warrenty. Call other HVAC shops and see what they have to say about the matter.

You NEED the proper line size for proper return of the refrigerant oil and freon to the compressor. That unit may last 6 yrs and you will be replacing the compressor probably with NO warranty. The installer is BSing you. Copper is REAL expensive and he doesn't want to spend the time or money to do the job right.

The oil will hang up in the evaporator coil and in the lines and no you cannot see it or tell by the pressures. I am a Journeyman Refrigeration Mech and studied line sizing etc in school and understand the theory of it.
