Last night when I got home from work the wife said the heater had a light smokey smell coming from the vents, within minutes I noticed it as well, so I shut it off at the thermostat. This morning I went to the outside unit and the fan ontop of the unit was not working, so I turned off the power to the unit and then I proceeded to clean out all debris (ie..leaves from this past fall) from around it near it and I took the top cover off and cleaned the leaves that were in the bottom of the inside of the unit as well. Then I restored power went back in the house and turned the unit back on from the thermostat. Once again warm air began blowing through the vents with no smell or anything else. All appeared fine, then with in 1 hour I noticed the same smell and I went to check the vents, once again no air or very, very little air was blowing through the vents, so I went outside and the outside fan on the unit was working. So I turned off the unit. I'm just trying to get an idea what is wrong, I plan on having some one fix it for me, because I am not qualified nor do I have the knowledge to do so, but I would like an idea of what it could be so that I can figure out myself what this may cost! I was thinking that it could be a short, the thermostat or the blower motor! Does anyone with any know have any ideas?

At the thermostat, turn heat/cool to "off" and turn fan "on". Go to your furnace/airhandler. Take the blower door off and watch and listen (and smell). If your blower fan is belt driven, the belt may be worn, loose or too tight. If the bearings in the blower motor are failing, the motor will overheat in short time. This situation should be somewhat noisy ( the motor may hum) and the smell associated will be pungent. If the belt is too tight, the bearings will eventually wear, but blower motors sometimes just go. If it's not just a belt ( the belt is in good repair and well adjusted ) or if you have a direct drive blower motor, and it is the bearings or even an internal electrical problem, there is no option but to have the motor replaced.

Thank you, I'll try that this weekend.

ok thanks, I'm just confused as I know very little about heat pumps. My home has a crawlspace/slab and you can walk completely upright in the crawlspace as my house was built on a hill! I'm pretty sure that components to both of my heat pumps are located in the crawlspace. Oh and last night I turned the unit to off and then turned the fan on (not auto) and let it run after about 30 minutes the fan shutoff by itself (not on auto and a/c - heat unit was set to off). This morning I tried to do the same thing and the fan acted like it wanted to come on but I could tell that it didn't and no air came out of vents. I again have shut the unit down. I'm leaning toward the fan being on its way out but I am not sure where I need to look to find this fan.
