I recently had some work done on my thermostat. It was done by my realtor. He told me there was no heat and called in a service. The company came out and toold him the switch needed to be changed. All i have to go by is a 500$ bill. I am really questioning the cost. The invoice lists "Camstat ADT 3" Limit Switch" that was installed and a cost of $490.00 for it. I am no HVAC tech nor do i have any diea but googling that word gives me costs of 100$ or less for this part. Did i get jipped?

Is that limit switch the gold plated, pearl inlaid model that went on the last shuttle trip before it was autographed by Babe Ruth? If so you got a fair deal.

I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything but would you have been able to diagnose the prolem, know what part to order and then replace it yourself? The company that provided the service also had to pay a technician to come to your house, put gas in his truck, pay insurance on that truck, keep the electricity on at the shop, etc..

You tell me if you got ripped off.

i am not saying that the guy doesnt have to do all that both of you have listed. I know all the costs involved. The bill said 50$ cost of labor and cost of item at $450.
I am from the service industry as well and know the cost of doing business and expect people who give me service to make money. There is a certain profit percentage every business has to put in for their services, this is no world of charity. Trust me i know. That does not give you guys reason to jump on me. But imagine if you went to a restaurant, industry i am in, it cost me 2$ to make a dish and adding profit etc i sell it for 5$ its a good deal, but if i sold the same thing for a 100$ it wudnt make sense...right! ofcourse iwudnt pay for a restaurant because theres another one down the street i can go to, but services like furnace repair or other utility repair take the advantage of the fact that people are like me unaware and can mandate whatever they want, that is all i ask, hence my reason to ask did i get ripped i wud be willing to pay fair price for a job knowing i cant do it and i have to pay for services....but please if the profit percentage was 500% then i totally disagree with it.
and unlike you guys weho jumped me the company actually has agreed to send me a cost breakdown to jsut make me understand, that is all i want to be, i want there to be a transparency in what i am paying for, nothing wrong in asking that.

the part you describe is a safety switch that will shut your furnace down if not replaced.I agree with Technician, your service tech fixed what was wrong and assumed the responsibility of its operation.if it was just about parts costs you should have done it yourself.if your pipes froze and flooded your house, see what that costs to fix.

What would be a fair charge to purchase $100 worth of groceries, take it to somoeone's home and prepare it there?
Remember to factor in licence, truck, insurances.
