My furnace has two problems:

1. Sometimes the furnace will not start, or will start once in a while, then stop even though the temp keeps dropping. Usually turning the furnace on and off will resume it on.

2. Sometimes the furnace will just hum, and i cannot see it trying to light. after approx 5 minutes it stops humming. the fan never comes on.

Also, i had a heating place come in, and he said it was the filter and charged me 75 dollars *rolls eyes* Its a brand new filter btw.

Update: I opened it up, and observed what was humming... it was a motor... so i turned off the power and tried to spin it. It was fairly hard to move. I continued to move it until it losened up. I turned the power back on and the furnace came on.

Why would this happen? And what can i do to prevent this? Can i lube it up somehow? Im not sure if this is just related to the times when the funace just humes, or when it wont keep the temp up....Thanks!

The motor is shot. If it runs now it won't run for long. The motor probably cooked itsself because of your dirty filter. You should have your a/c coil checked(if you have a/c) before replacing blower motor cuz that may be dirty too.
cheap disposable filter=89 cents at home creepo
New blower motor+capacitor+installation= $500

Filter was always clean. It always acted up. Furnace guy couldnt find the problem and just said get a new filter as an excuse.

Can i replace the motor myself?

Edit: I should say i always had a clean filter, this is my first winter in this house...the furnace never worked from the get-go. What i think hurt it was before i bought it, Winter of 2006-2007 the house wasnt occupied, and the owners never were there to change the filter, it went probably 8 months throughout the heating months (yeah, this is wisconsin) without a filter change.

Those motors are permanently lubed and sealed so you cannot lube it. Also if your tech couldn't find a bad blower motor(easy find) then it probably ran ok when he tested the system. We can't diagnose ghost problems without symptoms. I would say any of these things could cause blower failure:
Dirty filter
Dirty coil
Zone damper stuck closed
Frozen a/c coil
water
Power supply issues.
Bad capacitor
Improper duct design
Bad luck
Sometimes things just die for no good reason.

That sounds like typical list price around here, is that for a motor or motor+installation? Normally not a DIY project but if you're mechanically inclined anything is possible. Also supplier may not honor warranty if not installed by a contractor. You may need a hub puller to get the wheel off the shaft.

It was the exhaust motor. Price is 350-400 dollars.

WHat would cause this? The guy said it was just probably bad bearings.

I just checked this question and thats what I thought it was by the time I got to your last post 350 -400 sounds about right, reason being that the whole assembly has to be purchased (next to impossible to get a ventor wheel off of a ventor motor) and they just go every once in a while due to the rpm (usually 3000) and the acids in the exhaust, there is no way to oil that motor either, sorry..

When asked what steps to take while smelling natural gas please take my advice "long and rapid!!!"
