the fan noise coming out of registers is quite high. we have a 4ton Carrier (Comfort)model FY4ANF048. the fan motor is 3/4hp. at the lowest setting.all ductwork to registers is 5"diameter. the noise is especially hard to take at night when unit starts. how can we overcome this problem. forgot to mention, house is 3,176sq feet. air blows 4 to 6 feet out of registers.

Try a higher velocity register grill without a diffuser. (less metal area than a stamped grill/diffuser) Some high velocity systems use no screen at all.

If your fan is on lowest speed and you can hear the air like that then your ducts are too small. That system is supposed to run on high or med-high speed for best performance and efficiency. All you can do is replace them with larger ducts or possibly add more ducts(if trunks are big enough). My company usu. only uses 5" duct for bathrooms, and other small rooms. I can't speak for your house but 5" ducts sounds quite brutal! You should call a good tin-knocker to evaluate the duct system.
You can't put a price on comfort! Be Safe.
