What is the consensus on the best and most reliable way to control the valve for a whole-house humidifier so that water only flows when the fan is running [at a reasonable speed]?
Without explicit terminals on the air handler's control board, the options I'm aware of are: current-sensing relay, sail switch, and pressure switch.
I had previously come to the conclusion that a current-sensing relay would be best, only to learn that I should really wait until the [variable speed] blower is running at more than its slowest speed. The relay won't be able to tell when this occurs.
I had ruled out what is returning as the top contender: the sail switch. I thought it might be prone to accumulating dirt and being a pain to keep adjusted to the desired flow. I'm now thinking of mounting one in the humidifier's bypass duct.
The only other suggestion I've heard is using a pressure switch - presumably vacuum diaphram style in the return, or the positive pressure diaphram style somewhere above the air handler on in the bypass duct. I've had one persn avise that these are less reliable from a dirt accumulation standpoint, and am taking that warning seriously, even though I once thought it was the ultimate solution.
So, should I spend my $50 on a sail switch, or on a pressure switch? If anyone has a specific brand and model recommendation, I'm wide open to your suggestions.
Thanks.

Why don't you just use a simple single pole normally open relay. Connect the brk terminal from air handler to coil on relay. connect other side of coil to common. Break the hum wire from your thermostat with the normally open contacts on the relay. This way the relay contacts will only be closed when fan is running, and can only run with a call for humidity! There I solved it. Just be sure to check the voltage on that brk terminal and get the right relay. One of these would work great.

What is the model of your airhandler?

Its a Trane TWE031E. It does have a BRK terminal, supoosedly for humidifiers, but I don't believe it will work in my configuration where the t'stat will be in control of calling for moisture (with 24V when its wants humidity). The t'stat could open the valve for hours at a time, but I'm trying to keep the valve closed until the blower is running at a good clip.

Are you sure there's no 24v hum terminals on the circuitboard?

I fear the Trane's TWE "BRK" terminal, allegedly for humidifiers, will not do what I want since my new t'stat will be supplying the 24V for the solenoid when it wants humidity. I can't deprive the t'stat of 24V on 'R' just because the blower isn't running. Does that makse sense?
I have yet to hang a voltmeter on this Trane BRK terminal to see when it goes 'hot', nor have I stumbled onto any literature that describes its actual behavior w.r.t. the variable-speed blower.

Why cant you do solenoid wires 1 to common and 1 to g that way solenoid opens when fan is energized.

I'm not sure how your idea allows the thermostat/humidistat its "vote" on the solenoid opening. The t'stat has to want humidity AND the blower has to be running. I *think* I'm trying to run the t'stat's HUM (24V when it wants moisture) through this as-yet unchosen device at/near the blower to the solenoid in series. I'll re-read about the G terminal to see if there is more to your idea than meets my eye.

Theduke probably has the solution to your problems. I had to have one of those relays install on my newly installed Infinity 58MVC to control my humidifer because the humidifer model I had was the fan powered April Aire 760 the old model which has it's own curcuit bd inside this particular model which interferred with the circuit bd in the furnace and altimately would not allow the Infinity controller to operate the humidifer properly. So the installer had to install one of those relay's as shown in Thedukes post the first one shown is the one they needed to install. So not knowing too much in regards to HVAC I would suggest you have your installer look at possibility which could be your problem as I had. Money wise I think your still in the same range as all your other option, but I would have him come and do the wiring since these eletronics are somewhat sensitive to shorting out.
