This unit is a 3 ton payne split system single phase 240v, the problem is with the contactor in the condensing unit. About once a year the contactor will come apart in a violent fasion, see pics.
The first time I went out I thought it could be that a previous tech had used a contactor with too low a amp rating. Called the factory tech support, should be 30A FL double pole, no problem. Install the part, test run, away I go.
A year later, same thing. This time I replace the contactor take amp readings, run several times, nothing unusual happening. I install a time delay thinking it could be a LV problem causing chatter, even though I have no signs of this.
Now it lasted about a year and a half, same thing. Checked my T.D. and it is working, but I can see severe pitting on the contact pads which sure looks like a chatter problem, as there are no insect parts floating around and it is on all four contact pads evenly. Any ideas??? Scott

About those amp readings. Are you comparing amp draw to FLA or RLA rating on the unit nameplate? That is more important. Hard to say from here but I would suspect a faulty run capacitor, maybe even a faulty start capacitor(if there is one). High amps can be caused by a dirty condenser coil, overcharge, non-condensibles in system, bad capacitor, low supply voltage. Also check that contactor coil is energized with 24v. I believe they're rated for 20-30v. If voltage is too low then contactor will not be able to hold contacts closed tightly. If all is well then consider adding a hard start kit.

I recommend replacing the manufactures OEM hard star t kit with a supco SPP5 or a thermal PTC device. Also install a hard shut-off TXV and make sure that the condensor has a Recip for the compressor. Then you need to staRT using the GE contactors like Goodman does, instead of that cheap junk you have been using, those GE contactors never fail!

I'll try the hard start kit, can't hurt. As far as the contactor, I've got to use what the boss stocks. With the exception of ants or earwigs getting in them and welding closed, I've not had any repeat failures. Thanks for the ideas..........Scott

You dont need a GE contactor. That dude is either a GE promoter or a partschanger who would actually believe that repeat contactor failures are a manufacturers defect.
