The size is usually in the middle of the model umber. It is listed in multiples of 12. 38TRA048300 = 4 ton.
18 = 1 1/2 ton
24 = 2 ton
30 = 2 1/2 ton
36 = 3 ton
42 = 3 1/2 ton
48 = 4 ton
60 = 5 ton

The serial number usually hides the date code in the first 4 digits. 2205 would indicate the 22nd week of 2005.
Rheem and Ruud will have the date code in the center of the serial number after a letter (F2205).

Lennox numbers do not follow these rules.

Sort of do. A 211 is 21,000 Btus, 261 is 26,000 Btus. Would prefer manufacturers to make a mid size 21,000 Btu unit for my climate. 18,000 too small, 24,000 too big. Serial number is: 5896Exxx = 1996 4th month, 58 is manufacturing plant ie: Dallas.
