"HELP WITH SINGER CONDENSER MODEL" , posted Fri 23 May 12:08user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

Can someone tell me what ton this unit is, and also if I could use the old A-coil from my Frederich unit with it? I'm no HVAC
pro, I just don't have the money to replace with new, and my brother in law has this Singer in hiw warehouse. My old unit
is around 2 ton.

SINGER MODEL IS - ACR50036-25F

Thanks to anyone who can help

Around 2 ton is not a size. The singer is 3 tons which means you cannot use it.

Some of the really good HVAC companies here do under size the coil successfully to remove humidity. But very few! The entire system has to be installed properly and there aren't that many companies that will go to the trouble of doing it.

About 2 years ago at a home show, I specifically asked one of these companies whether or not under-sizing the coil would void the manufacturers warranty. He said not with the manufacturers he used (I believe it was Rheem/Ruud and Lennox). This same company also manufactured their own evaporator coils to their own specifications. Pretty intense systems if you ever saw one.

However, when I do see mismatched equipment in a Spec home installed by one of the same ole companies I see doing it wrong all the time, I figure it's a goof up on their part and write it up.

I mean geez, if you can't run the ducts properly, seal duct joints and the refrigerant lines at the evaporator coil housing, run the flex gas line through the furnace cabinet, not seal air leaks at the edges of the evaporator coil housing and have air leaks at the furnace/air handler connection, how in the world am I to believe they intentionally undersized the evap coil and did it right?

SINGER MODEL IS - ACR50036-25F

Is the Singer a window mount unit or an outside condenser?

If it is a condenser:
ICBW, but I think the 36 in the model number means 36000 BTUh, which would make it a 3 ton.

It takes 288,000 BTUs to turn one ton of ice into one ton of water in 24 hours.

Usually we refer to one ton of cooling, as a per hour rate. 288,000/24hrs = 12,000 BTUh = 1 TON Cooling.

In other words, that rate of heat in BTUs applied to a ton of ice per hour, would result in the whole ton melting into water in 24 hours.

So when you look at a model number you are sort of looking for multiples of 12. (ie 30 = 2 1/2 ton, 48 = 4 ton, etc.)

As far as the condenser/evaporator coils matching, I believe the system would work if charged properly. You would need a technician with an EPA Cert who is familiar with the field guide and charging forms. You have to take pressure and temperature measurements, find the superheat or subcooling to determine whether to add or remove refrigerant.

The types of refrigerant(s) used and proposed will further complicate the install, not to mention the brazing, the oil, the wiring, the vacuum and all the rest. Be safe.
