14 year old Trane SEER12 system. Not a lick of trouble. Thinking long term to invest in a current high efficiency American Standard Heat Pump System. All electric home with unit outside, not in attic with 1600sf. Wait or purchase now?

I would certaintly recommend replacing the system. In 2010 no more systems with R-22 will be manufactured and the price of the refrigerant will skyrocket. Recommend a high effecient Puron system. Carrier has been making them for over 15 years and are light years ahead of the rest of the competetion in the technology.

12 SEER ain't too bad but we have a tech from Houston who knows your climate and utility costs better and can give better advice than this Canuck. Hang in there.

If your going to a 16 SEER unit it's a great idea. If you're only upgrading to a 14 SEER, you will not see as much return on your investment.
When I went from a 10 SEER to a 14 SEER in 04, my bill went down @ $88 a month.

I looked at American Standard set-up not too long ago just for chit's & giggles even though I had just installed my Infinity furnace, it's a nice system and if you have the money I would do it now rather than later as prices for furnace's and AC/HP as well as other things for the consumers are only going to go up. So again if you can swing the $$$ I would do the upgrade but make sure you make it worth you time and get atleast 16 seer to get a faster payback.
