I know a heat pump has it's limitations in colder climates but with natural gas prices rising I'm wondering if it a good idea to re-think the possibilities. The local electric company offers interruptible service discounts for air conditioning/heat pumps and natural gas prices will continue to rise. Therefore, I'm considering a 95% gas furnace for back up heat coupled with a heat pump to handle the mild weather.

House is 2100 sq.ft. and is located in the southeast Michigan.

All experienced comments would be welcomed in making this decision.

When I had my Infinity 58MVC installed a couple of months ago I asked the installer what he thought about having a HP, He said his neighbor has the Hybred heat system using the Infinity set-up and he said he asboloutely love it and he claims he has never seen such chep utility bills since he has lived in his home, which is in PLymouth, Wi I am seriously thinking about go that route here where I am also as I have half the set-up already and my current AC is a older 10 seer R-22 unit and depending on how it functions this season I will be replacing it to complete the Hybred system. You can't lose lets just put it that way !!!

Using a heat pump with gas backup is a real sweet system. You get the best of both worlds. Just don't be fooled by efficiency ratings. $1 worth of Gas will always give you more BTUs than $1 worth of electricity. The savings come from using heat pump in mild weather. In other words when you run the heat pump you are paying more $$ per btu but using much less btus so it is cheaper overall. As fuel prices rise so will electric rates as the power plants use fuel to produce electricity. If system is set up right then you should save some money.

Electricity is produced in lower Michigan by coal and nuclear. My thought is natural gas prices will rise much faster here than electricity prices. If correct, a heat pump may look very attractive 5 years from now.
