"CONDENSATE LINESET FOR 410A" , posted Sat 2 Aug 08:18user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

Im replacing my old heat pump and they came to measure and said my 1" inch condensate lineset on my R-22 system was overkill, and that a 1/2" copper line is all I need especially for R410A.

Is this correct or are they just not doing the 1" line due to the high cost of copper? Furthermore, ..should I ask for some credit for the 1" copper lineset that will be scraped? I mean, in this market, isnt that worth something?

I dont want to quibble about scrap that they may or may not have priced in, but I certainly want the correct size diameter lineset in my new system.

Can anyone help?

Thanks...and thanks to all who have answered my previous posts. They have been most helpful!

( SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE TITLE POST- I hit 'ENTER' by mistake before I typed the post msg)

The size of the lineset is determined by the manufacturer and depends on the capacity of the unit and the length of the lines. Usually you have a 3/8 inch uninsulated line paired with a 7/8 inch or so insulated line that connect the indoor coil to the outdoor unit. If you are changing from an r22 system to an r410a system you need to replace the lineset anyways, because the two refrigerants use different types of oil and are not compatible.

Most of the scrapyards are paying about $2/lb for clean copper so an average lineset about 40ft long would net about $50 at the most.

PS the condensate line is usually PVC, is only a drain to carry water away from the indoor coil and it's size doesn't matter.

my unit will be a 4 ton , 410a unit.....i currently have 7/8 INCH INSULATED LINE PAIRED WITH A 3/8 UNINSULATED....thats why i was concerned when he said he'd go to a smaller lineset..saying 410a doesnt need as big a line...is that right?.

If the outdoor unit calls for a smaller lineset, then it's OK - but the lineset should almost never be smaller than the connections at the outdoor unit.
