What causes coils to freeze up and is it expensive to remedy?

May be a number of things

1/ Lack of air flow (dirty filter, bad blower motor, blocked return, etc.)
2/ Low on charge (suspect a leak)
3/ Operating outdoor condensing unit in low ambient conditions (typically below 55 deg) Can't imagine that happening this time of year unless you live in the mountains or Alaska.

Cost depends on the area you live or may be as cheap as a $4 filter.

If your suction line starts freezing within minutes, you probably have an airflow issue. If it takes longer (1hr) you probably low on charge (Leak)
