I have been sold a 5 ton Trane AC. Upon installation we found out it is 3 phase . The installer says he can convert it to 1 phase by replacing the compressor etc. Is this possible? If so how?

If I were asked to do a job like that I would have to bid it at least three times the labor. You're better off getting a new unit.

First things first. If someone is going to sell you the wrong voltage/phase equipment, who's to say that the equipment is sized correctly. Changing out the compressor and what ever else needs changed is dependent on the type of euipment. I would tell them to get thier equipment off your property.
