I have been sold a 5 ton Trane AC. Upon installation we found out it is 3 phase . The installer says he can convert it to 1 phase by replacing the compressor etc. Is this possible? If so how?

3 phase power is normally for industrial applications, was this a residential application? I'm surprised a 5 Ton unit is wired for 3 phase power. My guess is that the compressor motor is wired for 3 phase power. By changing out the compressor which includes the motor you can use single phase power (I am assuming 240V. You would probably have to alter the AC wiring for the control relay and disconnect/reconnect the lines to the compressor and leak test. I'd recommend exchanging with another 5 ton unit rather than replace the compressor.

Get them to bring you the proper single phase unit. Compressor, contactors, transformer, 2 fan motors etc etc all need replacing. It may no longer by UL approved after such extensive modifications and your insurance company may want it specially inspected/approved etc.
