Hi all, Currently I have a ten year old mid efficiency furnace, which is considered little oversized, 135,000 BTU, for the size of my house (2200 Sq. ft.). One of the heating contractors who came to my house recently is suggesting that I replace my furnace with a high efficiency right sized furnace. He says that will reduce my gas bill considerably and will offset the cost in five years. I am in a dilemma, since my existing furnace is not that old and it can go for another 5 - 8 years. Any suggestions/advice please.
Thank you

The high efficiency right sized furnace will be 12-15% more efficient. In Manitoba there is a $500 rebate if you buy one with a ECM DC variable speed motor. Furnaces go up 5% a year so with the rebate/fuel savings etc it is attractive to some people. Check with Ontario hydro as you guys have A/C rebates etc. The oversized unit won't consume that much more gas than the correct sized MID furnace as it runs shorter periods. They are more efficient when running longer. Not enough savings to throw it away. Upgrading to a high will definitely save you $$ and a good bean counter can do the $$ numbers for you to prove it. If it is a cheap ICP, Heil or Goodman I may throw it away. The gas valves and heat exchangers on some of them are junk.

Thanks Yuri! There is a net rebate of $ 1500 offered collectively by different agencies in Ontario, subject to a retrifit audit. My furnace is a Carrier make, and that makes me more hesitant to throw it away. Teh heating contractor has given me a quote for $ 3600 for a Lennox and $ 3200 for a Carrier, looks a pretty good deal!
Thanks,

Personally I like Lennox a bit better than Carrier. Been in the biz 30 yrs. Carrier had a bad batch of circuit boards 10 yrs ago (poor solder joints) so yours may fail. Those are good prices so I would take advantage of the rebates and go for it. The HSI igniters are far better on the new furnaces as well as the efficiency. The Lennox G61V is an extremely quiet and smooth furnace. We sell lots of them.
