I need some help trouble shooting an AC system we just had upgraded.
About 1 year ago we upgraded our HVAC system:
(1) Redid most of our ducting.
(2) Created 3 zones in the house - with Honeywell mini-zone thermostat unit
(3) Replaced the AC unit with a a Carrier Comfort Series Unit
The heating unit is a Trane Variable speed, high efficiency, two stage XV80 - which is about 5 years old.
When the unit was first upgraded, the AC would start out at a low volume, then after about 10 minutes the system would go into an over drive state: air coming thru the vents was very loud, air was icy cold and the volume of air coming out of the vents was impressive. If only one of the zones was on - that part of the house would get cold almost instantly.
Winter came early and we only used the AC once or twice. Summer came on with a vengeance - and the AC system can't
cool the house. The AC system never gets very cold and it hasn't gone into the over drive state I described above.
The installers came out and insisted there was a 20 degree difference between the return air and vents - which was to spec. They say we need to run the AC all day long and it is not designed to drop a room temp by 8 degrees.
I tested it this week: the outside temp was 96, I ran the AC in one zone - a 600 sq ft room - was at 85. It took 4 hours for the AC system to get the temp to 82 - by then the outside temp had dropped 10 degrees to 86.
Any thoughts what could be wrong? Or who I should talk to regarding fixing it?

There are too many variables to diagnose the problem effectively in this manner, however, the first thought that comes to mind is the zone system. Have you had this checked for proper operation? Also, if the system is not ramping properly then you're not moving enough air to properly contol the climate. It could be a problem with the control board.

How many tons is your A/C system? How many sq feet is your home?
