We've had our heat pump for approx. 14 months. A few months ago I came home from work and the A/C was blowing hot air? I turned the unit off and called a repair man. He came out and couldn't find anything wrong with it. (it wasn't showing any codes) The unit worked fine until earlier this week and it started the same thing over again. Now I can turn the thermostat off for a few hours and turn it back on and it will blow cold for about 30min. then it blows hot again? And there is a hissing sound every few seconds before it begins blowing hot again. Since our house was new that heat pump has settled somewhat, could that be the problem? I've replaced the filter and am out of ideas??? Anyone have a suggestion?

You were right on! The "O" wire was almost completely severed where the wiring coming from the heat pump entered the house (Probably due to the heat pump settling.)

Thanks Again!!

The "O" wire is not making good contact somewhere between the stat and the reversing valve or the defrost timer is failing. The loose connection is more likely.

O energizes the reversing valve for cooling. Without 24 volts to the reversing valve it will operate in heat mode. The reversing valve will sound like a bus stopping when switching positions.

"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.
