I purchased a 4 ton Heil 14 SEER split AC system (R22 refrig) from an internet seller (though I picked it up myself since they were located only 50 miles away). An acquaintance of mine, who is an AC tech, installed it with my help 2 days ago. Everything went well and I am pleased with the performance. However, one thing worries me a little.

The installer noticed that the small diamter line on the TXV valve (pressure-sensing I believe - aluminum?) was kinked. He carefully straightened it out. Like I said before, I am pleased with the performance and have experienced no problems in the 2 days it has been running. I do not really know what the TXV valve does, so I am not sure that if there has been damage to this line whether it would have caused a problem yet (maybe different conditions would cause failure / problems?). Also, I am concerned about the longer-term integrity of the line since it was kinked and worked back into shape.

Any advice about if I should be concerned and how I should proceed with this issue?

Thank You,

Eric

You got me puzzel some, in 40 years of refrigeration work I have never come across TXV with aluminium tubing conections
however manufactures are getting cheaper and cheaper so anything is possible. There is two type of TXV's in use from small to intermidia size units small units use internal equalized valves which have only two lager tubes example 3/8 OD liquid in and 1/2 to 5/8 out to the evaporator, the other is external equalized valve, this valve may have 1/2 to 5/8 liquid in and 5/8 to 1'"1/8 OD out to the evaporator (cooling coil),it will also have equalized line which is standar 1/4" OD, I believe this is the line you are talking about, as long the line did not cracked to start leaking don't wory about it, that is quite ok. Very small line that is aproximatly 1/8" OD or smaller coming of the top (looks like hot)of TXV it is valves tmperature sensor, if for any reason these tube cracks or brake off your unit will go into low pressure or perhaps even into vacuum and results would be no cooling.

The TXV's job is to meter the refrigerant into the indoor coil... The TXV creates a pressure drop in the line which causes rapid cooling of the liquid refrigerant as it enters the coil. The small line you're talking about is probably coming right off the top of the TXV and ends with a bulb which is clamped to the outside of the larger copper line at the evaporator. If so, this is the temperature sensing element and is what drives the valve open and closed. It is normal for these lines to be all coiled up when they are new and uncoiled and strapped to the line on installation. Sometimes they get kinked a little, as long as it doesn't leak it should be fine.
