You have to change a setting in installer set-up.
Installer's Guide here: http://customer.honeywell.com/techlit/pdf/PackedLit/69-1896EF.pdf
Follow the instructions on Pg 6 to get in installer set-up and change the value of function 280 from 1 to 0. That should turn the backlight off unless you are pressing buttons

How do I turn the backlight off until I need it? It currently is better than a night light.
Thanks

There are only two options. Always on - low brightness, or off and the backlight always turns on to full brightness when you press buttons, should only stay on for about 8 seconds and then go off, or dim depending on your settings. If it stays on bright all the time you may have a defective t/stat.
