My air conditioning unit has one air return centrally located in the house. The door to our master bedroom (bedroom,walk-in closets, and bathroom) is now closed to keep the pets out. Recently our electrical usage has gone up. Would it help to cut a hole above the door to return air even though there is a 3/4" gap under the door. The room is about the same temperature as it was before we closed the door. The new vent would be located about 6 'in each direction between two air supplies which are in the ceiling.

Is the return in the closed off area? Has the A/C been unable to get the house to the desired t-stat set point? Are you seeing frost develop on the refrigerant lines? If yes, then you have choked off the return air to the evaporater, and yes you need to correct this. Instead of cutting a hole above the door, try installing a louvered door. If the hole is too small, you are going to have a lot of air noise and still choked off return.

The door would be to the closed off area which is approximately an 1/6th of the total sq ft of the house. The temperature will get to the t-stat set point. Just seems that since we have closed of the area wattage and bill has gone up dramatically.

Then buy a louvered door and see what happens. If it wors, the reduction in the power bill will pay for the door.
