I have a WaterFurnace geothermal unit. When the unit shuts off after going thru the heating or cooling cycle, the compressor continues to run, possibly in reverse, untill I shut the power off. I recently had a new compressor installed, but am still having the problem. I've used two different HVAC companies over the last two years at great expense and no results. They are at a loss at diagnosing this. The malfunction does not occur after every cycle. Has anyone else had this problem?

Do you live in an area that experiences electrical brown-outs? Water Furnace control boards can be extremely sensitive. It sounds as though the problem is in the controls, possibly a contactor sticking or a control board relay sticking. As for the compressor running backwards, I do not believe that is the case. Is this a scroll compressor or a recipricating model? The scroll will sound like that if it continues to run solo. I agree with the other post, by the way. The company that replaced the compressor was either very inexperienced or simply taking advantage of you. Always seek out Water Furnace factory certified technicians. It's a wonderful system and we use them extensively for our commercial work. By the way, are you having the system maintained at least once annually, including a burp and juice on the loop?

I would start by asking the previous hackers you hired to refund the money you paid for the compressor that you didn't need. Then call a reputable contractor. Any decent tech could solve this one easy with a few voltage/ohm readings.
