I've been working on a 5 ton R-22 trane system with a txv metering device. The evap coil has been freezing up,suction pressure obviously low, head pressure was ok,subcooling dead on.I changed the txv,now same thing.I've even raised the fan speed from medium to high, still freezing.I'm racking my brain here, could it be non-condensables? Or am I missing something here?

How is your return air? Is it possible that a blockage has occured in the return air duct?

Try this site, it will tell you how to troubleshoot a TXV

Non-condensibles elevate head pressure. Outdoor air temp dictates head pressure, OAT + 30deg is a good rule of thumb. Did you weigh in the charge. A searching TXV: Check location of TXV bulb (4-5 or 8-9 o'clock) ensure entire bulb fits tightly against suction line, and is insulated. Make certain bulb is several inches downstream of ext. equalization line. If you previosly posted about mismatching SEER rated coils, then you are going to have issues. Let me know I have some data that could be helpful.

If you have the numbers, you need to post them. What is the super heat, discharge and suction pressure, etc..

I read nothing about changing out the drier. Did you?

No I didn't change the filter dryer.I didn't notice until after I started it up again that trane has the filter dryer installed in the condensor. But my head presssure is about 200,suction is fluctuating from 10 to 50 psi.Very strange.

Definetly not non-condensables!!!!!
It sounds more like you have a restriction in your piping. What is your subcooling? what is your superheat? Trane like to stick with 10-15 degree superheat. and a subcooling of about 30 degrees.
Could be a dirty evap coil of a lack of airflow.
