Yes, refrigerant that is mysteriously missing has gone somewhere. Any Refrigeration systems such as your home's a/c system does not consume, burn or use refrigerant. If it is low there is a leak. The first place to check is your valve stems, these deteriorate faster than most of your other system components. Low refrigerant charge may cause the compressor to overheat and trip an over-temperature switch or safety due to lack of cool refrigerant vapor over the compressors windings. If the unit is low on refrigerant due to a leak, repair it according to standard practices. A unit running for extended amounts of time with low refrigerant may cause permanent damage to the compressor.
