1st, I am 15 years out of refrigeration and heating school. I have off and on experience. I work in a very small rural community and work on a couple of a/c jobs a year. I am doing the startup on a goodman split system. GSH130 301 AB and ARUF 30 30.. The chart calls for the piston that was supplied with the outdoor unit. I installed it, proper direction I am assuming but only a removal will tell for sure because you never know... As soon as I started the unit I noticed the vapor pressure really high and without giving the proper thought ( I was worried about liquid into the compressor)I recovered r22 until it was down to 75 psi or so and then started taking measurements. Now after several hours of operation, superheat is over 45 degrees (undercharged a lot) it is about 100 degrees outside. All air flows are good air at return inside is 88 degrees out is 65 degrees... I am thinking that the flowrator is not seated or in backwards... Before I recover the rest of the charge so that I can weigh in a new charge and take the piston out and make sure it is in right and seating, is there something else that I should be thinking about. Like a reversing valve or something to do with the heatpump operation? I know that I have to get the proper charge back in it to trouble shoot correctly but I want to rule out any thing in the outside unit before putting a charge in it. Any suggestions will be great.

Suction pressue and Discharge pressure are directly related to indoor temp and outdoor temp. If it is 85 deg at the return you are going to have a high suct press. If it is 100 deg ouside you are going to have a high head press. Reclaim the entire charge, pull deep vacuum. Recharge by manufacturers specs. Make certain reversing valve is operating when is should ie. not energized when it sholdn't be. Allow the unit to run for atleast 10 min. before you start messing with the charge. If you had that kind of delta across the evap. then it was probably working; gota give the unit time to cool and the pressures should come down. Monitor compressor amps, superheat, and pressures. Check Goodman webpage for unit specs.
