Yesterday I got home (Condo Unit) and it was blazing hot inside. All I heard is the fan running and not the A/C. I turned it off and started it back up and the A/C ran for another 30-40 minutes. Since then only the fan is running and the A/C will not start up again. Any idea what might be causing this problem? The unit is 6 years old so I was thinking that the compresor should not be the problem.

It could be that your outdoor coil needs to be cleaned. Be sure to disconnect power to the outdoor unit first, then rinse the outdoor coil fins with your garden hose (being sure not to hit the ins with a direct stream, but rather, a gentler wash). Watch for dirt, grime and debris to wash to the bottom of the pan. Give it a few minutes, reconnect power to the unit and start it up. If the compressor kicks out again then you'll want to call a service company.

I fell on this site, it does seem for the advanced guys. Sorry about that, the only thing I am worried about is the compressor since everybody is telling me that it's the high ticket problem.

It could be many things; high pressure switch, low pressure switch, compressor overload, condensate overflow and on and on. If you don't know how to troubleshoot a/c I would call someone out.

I would call someone. Your unit is shutting itself off for a reason. Chances are it's because of one of the pressure switches or compressor overload, either way not good for your compressor. And yes the compressor is own of the most expensive parts.
