I am installing a Heat Pump for my father in-law and had a few questions... I am in the trades and understand most concepts...just had a few questions. It is a Ruud 4 ton 13 seer unit. 2700 square foot home...built in 1970. Two furnaces in series one fuel oil the other electric.
1. It is a fuel oil furnace with little room to spare on supply side of duct work. I have been told to leave a minimum of 3" between top of furnace and new coil. Is this correct? Can i possibly install the coil on the return side of the duct?
2. Does an expansion valve need to be added into the lineset? Im not real sure about this concept. Any info would be helpful.

Check the manufacturer's recommendations. Ideally, the coil needs to be in the supply plenum for proper operation. By the way, if the house is 2700 sq ft, 4 tons of cooling is going to leave you considerably short on cooling capacity (unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying).

Thanks for the reply...I am a 23 yo journeyman plumber in the state of MN by the way.

The wholesaler from whom I bought the air to air heat pump (Ferguson) was adamant that a 4 ton unit would be optimal. 700 sq. fet per ton is the calculation both them and several professional heating contractors in my area have suggested is plenty after doing a heat loss calculation. I appreciate the reply, just asking for a little help. I'm sure you know what it is like to have a father in-law who thinks he can do anything himself.
I would appreciate any response to the first question in my original post. The coil came with a plastic drip pan associated with it and I have been told that an oil furnace will get to hot for this plastic if kept too close. Hence the question about installing the coil further downstream or on the return side.

Comfort cooling is generally calculated 1ton of refrigeration per 400 sqft of living space. Check with some of you HVAC LU brothers about your load calc. As far as the plastic condensate pan, what does the installation manual state. You could possibly install the AHU not directly on top of the furnance, never in the return. But that is going to require some sheetmetat duct to be made.

Which trade are you in exactly?
1) Your 4ton heatpump will NEVER cool nor heat that house. You are about 36000 btu's shy.
2) 1ton of referigeration per 400 sqft of living space
3) 2700 sqft / 400 = 6.75 or 7ton heatpump
And the questions about installing the coil in the return, and the TXV, seriously what trade are you in. You very well might be in over your head on this one. I suggest calling a professional HVAC Contractor.
