If we get a Trane XL16i spit system (compressor/coil)installed, but keep our 14 yo Lennox furnace, will we get the expected 17 SEER?

What's the price difference between the XL16i and the XL15i?

I read on some website that with the upgrade in the A/C system an upgraded air handler is required. That's the furnace blower, right? I hate to replace the furnace when it works just fine.

Thanks.

You are correct. If you mismatch SEER rated components, then you will not get the desired effeciency rating. The furnance is a sepperate component, and is not included in measuring SEER ratings. As long as the AHU fits on top of the furnance, and does not restrict air flow, then there shouldn't be a problem. Now, as with more effecient HVAC equipment, furnances have also become more energy effecient. You can purchase a 90%+ furnance today. Your contractor might cut you a deal on an entire package.
