Is the suction line (larger insulated line)running from the ac unit to the furnace supposed to be cold or hot.

The manufacturer includes a superheat and/or a subcooling chart in the cabinet of the condenser(must have gauges to measure). Also if you have a TXV (13 SEER and up) you must make sure the subcooling values are between 10-15 degrees. You can go to the manufacturers web page and research the service facts for the unit.

The suction line should be beer can cold in the cooling mode (AC) and hot if it is a heatpump in heating mode. To know weather the system is over/under charged, you will need refrigerant gauges compatible for the refrigerant type (R22 - R410a).
