Where is the best location for a return air grill inside a home? Should there be a filter right inside the grill? Should there ever be more than one filter inside a return air duct?

Depending on system duct design, you may have R/A grills in differant rooms. If you have only one grill, the filter could be in the grill (Drop Down Type) or in the furnace or ductwork at the furnace. The best place for one r/a grill is in a commom area. Living room, hallway, etc. Do not put r/a grills in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, garage, etc.
More the one filter in the same duct run will restict air and cause problems.
