Hello - I live in downtown NY and my bedroom window is 1 story above the neighboring building which is being converted to a retail dept. store. As such, they are installing a 300 ton Evapco water tower which will essentially sit right beneath my window (large window 4'x8'). They are going to put a 4" sound attenuating barrier around the unit, but the top (essentially right beneath my window) will be open.

What do I have to worry about? How much noise/condensation/steam etc. should I expect? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated as I need to determine asap whether or not I want to fight this...THANKS in advance!

I worked on the cat walks running controls on 150 ton and a 200 ton Evapco units during the winter operations at a food packing plant and watched a 100 ton one at an office building as an apprentice many years ago, they dont always throw a lot of vapor, but at times they can also throw a hell of a lot of it and it goes more or less straight up. i wouldnt want to live over the top of one.

Little to none. The noise from those units come from the blower fans. Are they are putting a sound barrier around the unit for noise retension or trying to keep the unit out of public view.

The barrier is for both, noise and public view, however the top is exposed/open, right under my window. I always thought there was a lot of "exhaust" or condensation in the winter (I saw a video on youtube "Evapco Vent" which is what worried me). The unit is supposed to be approx 11.5' tall and 18.5' long, width approx 3-4'. The barrier is 4" thick and there will be about a 3' space between the barrier and the unit.

Thanks, your opinion is very helpful! There is a community meeting about it next week and I'm trying to decide if I want to make a stink about it or not. I don't mind seeing the actual unit, it's purely a concern of noise and vapor...

Definitely make a stink about it! It may not help, but you will regret not trying. This will not be an enjoyable thing to have under your window. It may not be the only place they can put the unit, just the cheapest. It may be possible to put it on another part of the roof that is less disruptive to the neighbors.(or to you, the sqeaky wheel!) If that is possible, then local authorities should have the power to make them do it even if it costs them more.

It's only a shock if your not expecting it!

Not sure what bringing it up t a meeting will do. People and places need heat and A/C. Just a fact of life. If it makes you feel any better, my neighbors fight morning noon and night. I'd glady take steam and blower fans over that!
