I have a Carrier 58 PAV and a gentleman I know came to look at it. The fan motor quit working, so he took it out. There is a lot of rust in the bottom of the unit, obviously from the coil above (and upflow unit). The coils are rusted and need to be replaced as well. My question is this. The heat burners are somewhat rusted and covered with calcium deposits from the leaking coil (gotta wonder what I paid for when the other guys came out to service it!). He is not sure if the gas combustion unit (not sure of the part name--the gas burner assembly) needs to be replaced or not, but he said if it were him, he would replace the whole unit with a new one--updating to the new Puron ones, requiring a new compressor too.
I am wondering if it is cost effective to replace the coils, the gas burner and the fan or if I should just replace the unit. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Is it cost effective to just replace the inside unit and not bother with updating to the new Puron? There is nothing wrong with the compressor outside. Please respond quickly. Thank you for your time.

The first 4 digits of your serial number indicate week and year of manufacture. The 58PAV was in production for over 10 years, is your furnace a 1992, or newer? Does the gas valve and pc board have water damage? While I don't know the expected life of that furnace in Ohio, I'd expect 20 years from that furnace around here.
If your outdoor unit is a Carrier 38CK series (10 seer) I would update the condenser and coil. If you want more than an entry level system, a variable speed furnace should also be installed.
