I have 3 year old tempstar furnace, model 8mpn, nat gas. The thing fires up whith tstat locked high, vent fan comes on, pilot lites, burner will not light. It trys this a couple times and then shuts down for a few minutes and then trys again. It has a honeywell sv9541 valve, it blinks green 6+1. I am not getting a call for main gas or the main gas valve is not opening. Vacuum switch is closing, everything seems fine, just no main gas. Any ideas? Could the gas valve be bad? How could I check that?

The pilot may not be proving itself. Try removing the ignitor and clean the flame sense rod with a piece of steelwool. Be careful to stay away from the ignitor with the steel wool.
If in doubt call a pro !

Thanks for the input! Also, thanks for the troubleshooting guide! The exhaust fan kicks on and the pressure switch is closing so I have enough vacuum. I had broken the pilot assembly while trying to clean it, I replaced it with new and the new one works well. I did take a mvolt reading while the pilot was lighting and with no pilot I read 0 mvolts, when the ignitor comes on I instantly get an increasing signal all the way up to 400 mvolts when the pilot flame is burning. So it looks like the pilot and thermocouple are working. Going by the troubleshooting guide that was attached above, I need to check my gas pressure. What range of gas pressure should I see for correct operation?

I'll second that! It definitely sounds like a flame proving problem. make sure the flame rod, and ground rod are clean, the ceramic is not cracked. also make sure that the pilot flame is making good contact with the two flame rods. If it still doesnt work, change the flame rod.
It's only a shock if your not expecting it!

I agree.
