Hello,
I have a Goodman GMT070-3, natural gas, and it's about 5 years old.
When I went to test the heater today there was no ignition. However, I do hear a hum coming from the heater.
This is what I have done: 1. the air conditioner does work 2. the fan does come on for the air conditioner 3. the fan does come on when I switch the thermostat to just run the fan. 4. I have switched the breaker off and on. 5. I took both the front top and front bottom covers off just to see what was going on. 6. When I push the starter button in, the one that is normally pushed in when the bottom cover in installed, I hear a hum, and I see a solid red light on the control board. 7. I have turned the thermostat on and off, and I have turned the emergency power switch off and on. 8. Importantly, when I do hear the hum I am NOT smelling gas, and obviously that is a good thing. 9. I have a gas fireplace and that works so I know that there is gas coming into the house.
I called goodman and they emailed me the installation and operation guide. Based off of that guide I figured that I would try on step that seemed pretty simple. That step suggested to reset the flame roll out switches. These are small push button switches on top of the sensor.
I did that and the heater then started to make a whining noise. Not a very loud noise and I figured maybe it was just starting up, which it did. The heater did kick on, but the whining noise did not go away so I just shut the breaker off to the heater.
Thanks for your time and consideration. I greatly appreciate your input and feedback.

Flame rollout switches are CRITICAL safety devices which should NEVER trip unless there is a major problem like a cracked heat exchanger. Sounds like your ventor fan is seizing up/running too slow and that may be part of the problem. DO NOT reset those switches without calling a experienced service tech to find out why they tripped!!

Hi Yuri,
Thanks for getting back to me. I am not going to mess with the heater at all.
I do have a question for you. Why do you think that the heater was just humming without igniting before I reset the switches? The status light on the control board was solid, it just would not ignite.
Additionally, would resetting those switches have caused any problem?
Thanks again...

Goomans are notorious for popping the rings that hold the HX together. very dangerous.

Hello gabrielnorbac,
First I would like to thank both you, Yuri, and Tinner73 for your input and advice.
You're right it is the small exhaust fan. I talked to a HVAC mechanic today, and he suggested the same thing. So I turned the system on and that is what is making the whining noise. The system is cycling fine but it seems as though the bearings are shot in the small fan.
I ordered a replacement part B4059000. It looks like it should be pretty easy to replace. However, I would ask you if there are any potential issues that I should be aware of while removing or installing the new part.
Again, thank you very much for your time and consideration.
The part should arrive by Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
Thanks again!!!

Hi Tinner73,
Yes it is spinning, and it seems to be spinning at normal speed.
Thank you so much for input and feedback. Do you have any advice regarding the installation of the new part when I receive it next week. It seems pretty straight forward, but you would certainly know this better than I.
Again, thank you...

Tinner73,
You're awesome!!! I removed the fan and there was a dead bird in there. Reassembled and it is working great...
One question. I need a new felt gasket pad for the assembly. The other one is kind of beat. Although I removed it gently some of the gasket stuck to the fan assembly, and some stuck to the heater, and some just came off. It's not terrible, but while I am doing this I would rather replace the gasket.
Do you know where I could get a new gasket for the goodman B4059000?
Again, thank you so much.
Warm Regards...

if you can't find the felt gasket online i'd remove the old gasket and replace with hi-temp rtv.

Hi Again,
Should I remove all of the felt gasket or use the high temp rtv with the felt?
Again, thank you very much. Your input and feedback has been extremely helpful.
Warm Regards

Da*n birds. Had one mess up a high efficiency unit yesterday. I would put a thick bead of red RTV high temp silicone on the fan and heat exchanger/collector box. Carefully position the fan on. Let it cure for 8 hrs B4 firing it up. Send mother nature the bill.
