I have a Lennox Whisper heater and it won't ignite. The only way I can get it to ignite is to fan the front of the heater.
The vent opens The firing mechanism makes a "clicking" noise after about a minute the fan will kick on but no ignition
I have found that fanning the front of the unit will help it to ignite. It seems like when I fan hard enough, the firing mechanism will stop clicking and about 10 seconds of hard fanning (after the clicking stops) allows the burners to ignite.
Any suggestions?

Pilot orfice is stopped up and not enough gas into pilot so that spark can ignite. Better call a professional to make repairs for your safety.

This may be a stupid question, but how do I do that?

I would try using 2 fans, both on medium speed.

Aquarium pump on a pressure switch works good too. Amazing what you can learn on the net.

If you have that blue johnson controls spark ignition control box I would start by replacing that. Those things suck its the only furnace you can walk up to give it a good slap and it starts up everytime. Get the upgraded honeywell spark ignition control with 30 second pre purge. But seriously it sounds like you dont have a good pilot flame to sense the flame. If your feeling confident get a 7/16 wrench and unscrew the silver pilot tubing "WITH THE POWER AND GAS OFF" out of the gas valve and blow into it you may have debris at the end of the pilot tube where the flame is generated which is probably causing your flame to be deflected away from the flame proving sensor that is why it works when you waft it.
