Working on a Trane XR 90. When thermostat kicks on, the blower runs but furnace does not ignite even after 10 or so minutes of running. The alert light flashes 9 times....indicating bad thermal ignitor. Other issue, the blower does not turn off via thermostat switch or power switch, it just keeps running until I turn off main circuit switch. 4 year old unit. What can be done? Thanks.

Are you sure it isn't open inducer limit switch?

Inside the door on my chart, it tells me that 9 flashes are to check the thermal ignitor. Its a Trane XR 90. Is this not sounding right?

If that is what the error code indicates based on the sticker on your unit, then that is probably what it is. Ignitor failures are commonplace. Just replace the ignitor.

It's only a shock if your not expecting it!

The drawback of posting XR90 instead of a model number is that multiple models have that sticker.

Does the ignitor appear damaged?

Turn off the stat and then remove power to your furnace.
Restore power to the furnace.
This should reset an ignitor error.
Give the stat a heat demand and observe your furnace starting sequence.

Induced draft motor runs.

The ignitor glows red.

The gas valve clicks and burners ignite.

After a warm up period the blower runs.
