please let me know if this is not the right place to ask this question - I selected to post here since I did find the best
reply to a very much related question when searching the web.
ok, this is a Tempstar heating unit NTC6075FBA1 and most likely 11 years old. we just acquired the house it is installed in a few month ago and since it turned cool here in Arkansas tried to turn it on. It operated ok for a couple brief (several minutes at a time) tests. then it was run for a while (and that with a filter that was not cleaned!) and after turning it off it now refuses to turn on again.
let me give details about what we know at this point.
on asking for heating the exhaust blower comes on, then the heating element of the pilot lights up and gas is directed to the pilot. the heat sensor on the pilot get really warm, I can see it turn reddish BUT different than the manual suggests the electric current to the heating element does not cut out at this point and no gas gets to the (3) burners.
let me admit that I broke the heating element first. it was very brittle. it is now replaced with a new unit (Honeywell Q3450C).
there are several thermo couples and they seem all in the 'normally closed' position as the manual asks for. then there is some pressure switch which seems ok (if I understand correctly, there would not even be any action for the pilot otherwise) since it closes after a few seconds. all this within the same box as the heat exchanger.
then there is a second (attached) box for the main blower with more Honeywell electronics (ST9120 C). it also starts up ok. I should mention that this unit is mounted horizontal with exhaust to the left and that the unit is in a 'crawl space' under the house. there are two more electric components ontop and under this main blower which look also like further thermo couples, however I can not reach those.
at this point I suspect that the gas valve/ignition unit (Honeywell SV9500) is deffect.
is this a correct assesment? could there be some other factor (like for example those two components I can't reach) prevent the gas valve from functioning ok?
I feel like the fact that the heating elements current isn't cut is the strongest evidence for my assumption.
is there anything one can do for that short of getting a new unit to replace this one?
