I moved into a house about a month ago that has a Honeywell Chronotherm III that was complaining of needing new batteries all the time (even though they are replaced, there is connectivity between the tab/terminal, etc). So I decided to replace it....

So I bought a new thermostat, only to realize afterwards that I have a 2 stage system for heating. So I had to put my old Honeywell back in place and can't recall if the one black wire I had went to the E or W2 terminal. I've seen some people suggest installing a jumper from E to W2. I have heat pump that once the outside temperature reaches a certain set value, the propane gas kicks in. Is that the best "catch all", or is it likely it's on E.

On a semi-related note, I have 7 wires coming in to my old system, but only 6 were used. The white wire wasn't stripped and in use at all. Is this OK?

It should be wired to W2 with a jumper to E.
