We recently took everything off the walls and did new drywall.
The thermostat wires (only two) were left dangling. The oil burner off.
I hooked everything back up and get no firing of the furnace. Tried to put on a new thermostat. Turned up the heat on thermostat & still no furnace.
I checked that I was getting poer to the furnace on/off switch & I was. I checked the wire hook up past the switch and it was hot. I do hear a humming (transformer?)when I turn the switch on.
any ideas? It's getting cold in northern Md.

what brand of thermostat and what are the terminals labeled as
ie: R W Y G Rc Rh O ...etc

if you have heat only hook to red wire to R and white wire to W
or red wire to Rh and white wire to W

hey Wingnut 2u
I checked to see if I had the wires hooked up right on my Honeywell Thermostat. Only a White and Red coming from the furnace and both are on the correct "W" and "R".
The oil burner worked fine until I reinstalled the old thermostat after doing the drywall and then, when it did not fire the furnace replaced it with another thermo that STILL did not fire the furnace,
If I put my multi meter on the thermo leads at the wall what reading should I expect? low voltage system.
Maybe the wires have been cut in the wall. What if I short out the two leads near the furnace to see if it runs? That would tell me if I'm getting juice to the thermo (I guess just putting the multimeter on the leads at the wall does the same) LOST.
