we had a warm day here yesterday and I turned the a/c on and about 20min or so I noticed it was getting warmer in the house so I went out back and the fan was not running but the compressor was so I shut the system down. now how do I check to see if the fan motor is bad or could it be something else? a/c is a 6 year old tempstar 4 ton

Since the fan motor and compressor are powered off the same contactor. The most common thing would be the fan motor bearings. You could verify it is being powered.

Mike you could try turning the fan blade manually with a screwdriver, if there is any resistance to motion, the motor is finished, otherwise you have an electical problem, I would have the motor replaced..very common problem. Actually mike, you may also have condenser fan motor cycling installed, did the motor not work at all?, did you haoppen to notice if it was cycling on/off?
