We are new homeowners in Texas(built 12/2002) with a 1950 sq. ft. 1 story, central air, and a Carrier system with Puron refrigerant. It worked like a champ until September when it stopped cooling well and ran constantly... Airtron (suppliers) came out and checked for leaks but said they couldn't find one but the system had only 3 lbs of Puron out of 6. They re-filled and said they'd re-check it in a couple of months. Last week it did the same thing, only this time it dripped water all over our ceiling and now we have water damage. Again, the came and checked, again we were 3 lbs low... and no leaks found. They say it could be a leak within the wall. The will send someone with fancier equipment out to check. In the meantime, they filled it again. My concern is that our warranty expires this December, we have a non-working brand new A/C unit. With these sort of problems, should we be pushing the builder to put in a completely new unit? Once a leak is found and repaired, what is the likelihood of it re-leaking or of the system failing early because of it's current problems? Will there be permanent damage, or is an A/C unit the type of thing that can be fixed "good as new"?

Thanks.

Sue your general contractor..Only kidding..unless you personally hired your heating contractor, the general contractor should make sure you have a remedy.
the heating or in this case air conditioning guys won't want to take all the refrigerant out and charge the system with nitrogen to ensure they don't have leaks, time consuming and they're not on the clock fixing what they screwed up.
Puron runs at a higher pressure than the older R22 and even a really small leak will lose half a charge easily.
If this company has a problem making sure there are no leaks on the initial install, and don't carry the "sensitive" equipment to find them, I suggest getting another company and having your general contractor foot the bill. He in turn can recover from the original installers or take the loss.

Ps water damage is from condensation...not insulating the suction line or a bad condensate drain/pump..if the pump is bad an overflow switch should have been wired in to shut off the a/c and prevent damage

good luck

Dave

The unit will be fine and the odds of getting a new one are next to none. You must make sure that the leak is found and repaired. Do to these circumstances I that would insist on a letter of guarantee for refrigerant leaks for an additional 6 months. Also be there when he leak checks and make sure he puts in under a pressure test with nitrogen.

The best way to escape a problem is to solve it.
