When I run my Kenmore 18000 btu window ac unit to any significant degree, eventually the front coils by the filter freeze up and block the passage of air into the unit. In the past, I used to have to run it very hard for it to freeze up . Lately however, it doesn't even keep the room very cool and it starts to freeze up on me. When this happens I will turns the thermostat warmer until the ice melts, then try again. What can I do? Do I have to replace the unit? Please advise.

Most likely it only requires a good cleaning. Both the evaporator and fan blades. If this doesn’t work it may be short of refrigerant. The coils may not look that dirty if you were to clean them out you may be surprised. Cleaning a window air conditioner is actually quite difficult. And may be best left to a professional. I am sure there may be a local shop in the area that you could drop it off for a reasonable fee. If on the other hand you are mechanically inclined I can lend some advice.
