I’m trying to install a new thermostat and replace the thermostat wiring in my recently purchased old house (it's a fixer-upper built around 1900 and updated in the 1950s/1960s). The furnace is an old (exact age unknown, but there’s a service tag marked 1964 on it) American Standard oil-fired hot-water system. It still has a few more years of useful life left in it. The current thermostat works, but not very well - it's difficult to use and the thermometer's accuracy is questionable at best. The current wiring is cloth-wrapped and deteriorating. The thermostat wiring on the furnace has three wires and two terminals. The wires are not color coded, and the terminals are not labelled. I can’t very well match up the old wiring with the new to replace it. My problem, then, is figuring out how to wire the thermostat into the furnace. Any suggestions? I can provide pictures of the furnace, if that would help. I’m planning to use a Honeywell thermostat, model CT87A.
Much appreciated, Charlie

The question you need to answer is where do they connect on the thermostat now. It’s possibly the same terminals.
Xenos.
The best way to escape a problem is to solve it.
