We did not have a problem until this September. Over the summer we had new siding, soffits, etc. installed on our townhouse. Now, whenever our furnace comes on there are loud popping noises. It seems to be coming from the ductwork but we're not sure. The furnace does not have an air cleaner. It is an Heil gas mid-efficient furnace. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated???

It’s most likely is the duct work, when the duct work fills with air if the braces ( little bends ) have become weak the duct work will pop. Go down stars and have your wife cycle the unit and try to locate the section of duct causing the noise.
IE. With the system off just push on one of the larger sections you will make it pop.

Agree. Your duct work most likely the cause.
Your duct should be 'broke' (creased) inwards on the return side and out on the supply side. This is so the duct is already pulled in the direction of the air pressure (factory, or prefab, duct uses ribs to instead of brakes and shouldn't 'pop' at all in either the return or supply trunk if the duct is sized correctly).
I commonly see return ducts broke outwards on installs. The negative pressure when the furnace starts causes the duct to make a pretty significant sound. However, I would expect the duct to eventually 'pop back' when it shuts off. Does it?
If the culprit section is exposed, a length of 'S' strap zip screwed into the side of offending piece of tin should give it enough support. If not exposed, well, get a good drywall contractor lined up first.

That’s awesome your good. I never knew the creases were reversed.

Thank you - your help is very much appreciated. The ductwork is 28 years old and I'm told that it gets "soft" after that period of time. The ducts do appear to be a little thin so maybe its time to have them replaced. I will try the process though of asking my wife to help me locate which piece might be the most problematic and maybe we can solve the problem short-term just by replacing that piece.
Thanks again. GEM
