I would like to add 10 or 15 kw electric heat strips to my gas furnace/heat pump because during off peak periods it is actually cheaper for me to use electric heat than gas heat. I have a computerized energy management system that can run a relay that will switch between the two heat sources. My current setup is already dual fuel and switches from heat pump to auxiliary heat when the outdoor temperature drops below 30 degrees. What I am trying to do is set it up so that when auxiliary heat is called for (W) the source of that heat will be dependant on the state of the relay controlled by the energy management system. The first obstacle to get past is the fact that I don�t have any auxiliary heat strips installed in this system. Is it possible to add heat strips? The furnace is in an updraft configuration. The Coil (Carrier model # CK5AXA042000AAAA) sits on top of the furnace and above that there is about 2 feet of field-fabricated sheet metal before the ductwork splits off in two directions. I think the heat strips would need to be installed in place of the field-fabricated sheet metal. Can I just buy a kit to add this or is this too strange to buy off the shelf?
